Founded as a home for new ideas in higher education, Hampshire College is a 4-year liberal arts college in western Massachusetts. Hampshire challenges all students to create an individualized curriculum culminating in a year-long advanced study project. In addition, every student chooses two or three faculty members to serve as an advising committee . The college provides narrative evaluations in lieu of grades and does not require SAT or ACT scores for admission. With class sizes ranging from 250 to 350 and a student/faculty ratio of 9:1, Hampshire students are guided closely as they pursue individual questions and generate original research. Hampshire is in the top 2% of institutions whose graduates go on to earn Ph.D.s, and 23% of graduates start their own business or nonprofit.With narrative evaluations in place of grades, self-designed majors, and a truly open curriculum, Hampshire students have the freedom and agency to make their education, not just take it.
